Character Matters at Whitchurch Highlands
"Character education involves the preparation of learners to be responsible, caring and contributing citizens. Good character is a cornerstone of a civil, just and democratic society; it can be both taught and learned. It contributes to the development of safe, supportive schools, develops the emotional and social learning and enhances academic achievement. It contributes to the individual's personal well being."

At Whitchurch Highlands Public School, the Path of the Wolf is the road to good Character.

Here are our Character Matters themes for the year:
Responsibility Respect Honesty Empathy
Initiative Fairness Courage Integrity
Perseverance Optimism

A Message from the Principal

As we enter the last stretch of the school year, it is important that we maintain our focus on academics and be sure to adhere to the school expectations. Thank you to the many parents who are working diligently to ensure that their children are at school on time in the morning, ready to line up in the yard by 9:05. We also appreciate when children remain in school until the final dismissal at 3:40. This ensures fewer disruptions to instructional time. We are noticing, however, that a number of parents are calling the school at 3:15 with messages for their children about pick-up plans. Please understand that this is not the responsibility of the school secretary, and due to a variety of reasons, your message may not be relayed to your child in time. Arrangements should be made with your children before they arrive at school each day so that they know whether or not to get on the bus. We appreciate your cooperation with these issues.

As you review the calendars for May and June, you will see that there are many activities planned. We must remember to thank the staff and volunteer parents for their ongoing support of your children—they provide a wonderful selection of clubs, sports activities, reading support, music presentations, Yearbook, and so much more! In a small school, we are most fortunate to have so many dedicated people working together to enhance the learning experiences for our students.

Have you booked a table for the Yard Sale-a-Palooza? Don’t delay—only a limited number of tables will be available. In addition to the sale will be a car wash and activities for children. It should be a great community event so be sure to get involved! And you will have the opportunity to sell all your treasures—old and new!

We have been invited to participate in a “family of schools” mural painting activity at Stouffville District Secondary School. Some artistic students from grade 8 have been selected to create a mural that will be on display in the high school. Pictures will follow in our June Pack News.

The annual Jump Rope for Heart event will be taking place next week. Our Heart Healthy Captains are providing interesting facts in the morning announcements each day so that everyone learns more about being healthy. We invite you to join us in the afternoon for skipping with the children in the yard.

Our next School Council meeting will take place in the library, on Thursday, May 24, 2012. We hope to see you all there!
